How to get a recruiter’s attention on LinkedIn

If you’re about to start your job hunt or you’ve neglected your LinkedIn profile while no longer job seeking…working on your profile is guaranteed to attract a recruiter’s attention on LinkedIn.

Why LinkedIn?

I know what you’re thinking…’I get it, I get it, LinkedIn is important!’ but let’s have a quick look as to why recruiters rely on LinkedIn to source candidates and fill job vacancies with clients.

First of all, LinkedIn acts as a huge data pool of candidates that self-manage their careers; they care about presenting themselves professionally and list their skills and experience. It makes things easy for a recruiter to track down candidates they think fit their clients’ needs.

Here are some quick stats (via The Undercover Recruiter)

  • There are 187 million unique monthly visitors to LinkedIn and two new members join every second
  • There are LinkedIn users located in 200 countries and territories
  • Two out of five LinkedIn users log in at least once a day.

Optimise your profile

Here’s where you come in. How do I make my LinkedIn profile stand out to attract a recruiter’s attention? Well the easy thing is, you just need to promote yourself as a specialist in your chosen field while highlighting your skills and achievements.

Now here’s how to make that information stand out:

    • Your photo should be friendly and professional, not a selfie. And not a photo of you in business clothes with hollow eyes.
    • The summary section should emphasise your professional background but you also need to mention here why you’re passionate about your work, and it doesn’t hurt to add some personal information about your other interests.
    • Go into detail when talking about your previous experience, and this is another opportunity to use relevant industry keywords that correspond to your skills.
    • Use keywords related to your industry in your headline, don’t just mention your job title. Instead of ‘Recruitment Consultant’ try ‘Recruiter with 10 years experience placing industry leaders.’
    • The summary section should emphasise your professional background but you also need to mention here why you’re passionate about your work, and it doesn’t hurt to add some personal information about your other interests.
    • List skills that are up-to-date and seek out endorsements from others; when you endorse someone else’s skills they’re likely to endorse you back. And the same goes with recommendations! It’s so important you get these asap.

Keep your LinkedIn profile relevant

Whether you’re employed or not, you should be spending time on LinkedIn to regularly touch base with your connections and update your profile when needed.

LinkedIn expert Cheryl Simpson wrote for Careerealism that you should do the following each week at least:

  • Create a status update.
  • Review your profile’s key words and add or upgrade as needed.
  • Accept relevant invitations to connect with a personalised message.
  • Review your group memberships and stay involved in those that offer you the most relevant benefits.
  • Review weekly group discussions and look for a couple to which you can offer advice, insight, or comments.
  • Reciprocate endorsements when appropriate and relevant to do so.
  • Thank those who endorse you with a personalized message.
  • Solicit testimonials on an ongoing basis; don’t wait until you need them.
  • Review the automated updates LinkedIn sends you about your network. Send personalized congratulatory messages to connections reporting happy news.
  • Source new recruiters, hiring executives, and influential contacts to connect with and follow.
  • Source new companies to follow and leverage your network to build inroads to hiring executives.
  • Manage relationships with key connections by periodically offering valuable resources or information without waiting to be asked.

However, there has been a volume surge in Pace’s resource requirements recently and Square One has provided successfully against every single requirement. At the project peak this year, we had 10 contractors on site.

Teamsolve - Study

Teamsolve is an Oracle e-business Gold Partner, whose practice areas are based on database support and remote e-business best practices. Location: Derby Over the past 5 years, we have placed 84 Contractors (half of these Contractors’ contracts are extended repeatedly) with Teamsolve and have outperformed their original suppliers through consistent delivery of high quality resources; this has led to us becoming a Trusted Partner to Teamsolve, who have awarded us lead vendor status. We do not supply Teamsolve on long term engagement i.e. 3 to 6 months plus. Due to the nature of their business they only require Contractors for 1, 2 or 3 day engagements. As we are committed to supporting Teamsolve in achieving their business objectives, we put the same effort into successfully resourcing for these short term engagements as we would do the long term ones.

RCUK - Study

RCUK’s is the largest implementation of Oracle R12 in the UK. Square One was the most successful supplier of contract resource to this project, with 25 Contractors onsite at its peak. The location, Swindon, and the fact that this was a public sector project meant that this was a challenging search as most Contractors had anywhere between an hour and 2 hours commute each way; also the Contractor’s daily rates were lower in comparison to commercial projects. Due to the Square One’s extensive knowledge of the Oracle application candidate base in the UK, we were able to find candidates who not only committed to the commute to Swindon, but also to seeing the project through to completion. This is demonstrated by the continued low attrition rate of our placed contractors, despite the market showed signs of improvement.
