We have an exciting opportunity now available with one of our sector-leading consultancy clients! They are currently looking for a skilled Lead Infrastructure Engineer (End User Compute) to join our clients team in the defence sector.

Job Responsibilities/Objectives

The Lead Infrastructure Engineer (End User Compute) will lead the End User Compute (EUC) workstream, will report to the Lead Engineer or Project Manager for assignment as necessary and will design, deploy, configure and maintain the EUC components of a Wintel and VMware-based multi-tenant / multi-datacentre platform, utilising VMware Horizon. The Lead Infrastructure Engineer (EUC) will be responsible for all aspects of the EUC design, basing all design decisions upon supplier and NCSC recommended practices, ahering with end user and security architectural requirements, facilitating the availability and consistent performance of the core application suite.


This is a hands-on position requiring solid technical, as well as excellent interpersonal, communications and writing skills. The Lead Infrastructure Engineer (EUC) will document the design, which will adhere to secure by design (SbD) principles, be fault tolerance / resilience and support disaster recovery; automate and document as much of the build prosess as possible, resolving defects / issues post testing and implement design changes as directed by the Technical leadership and / or Project Managers as may applicable.


The Lead Infrastructure Engineer (EUC) will drive the direction of all tasks allocated to the EUC services workstream throughout the delivery lifecycle of any task and will additionally provide input and support to other workstreams as may be required.

  • Be responsible for design of multi-site / Mutli-Tenancy VDI Farms using VMware Horizon View and related technologies.
  • Produce and maintain design artefacts, such as but not limited to Low-Level Designs, Release Notes, Vitrualisation Services related fail-over / disaster recovery instruction
  • Document the builld process, new procedures and review/update as required throughout the delivery
  • Be the main point of contact (PoC) for all virtualisation related matters
  • Manage VDI Services deployments through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to test and reference, through to the mission-critical production systems
  • Provide input into the Event and Protective monitoring processes as relate to the VDI Services workstream
  • Share technical expertise, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to other peers and team members
  • Independently analyse, solve and correct issues; performing problem resolution end-to-end; providing feedback as required
  • Work in a disciplined and structured manner
  • Attend Client facing meetings as required
  • Develop and maintain third party supplier relationships as necessary
  • Provide regular updates to the Technical and project leadership regarding all aspects of the Virtulisation Services delivery.
  • Quickly escalate any issues, which may impact the delivery of the Virtulisation Services components
  • Proactive problem solving
  • Be used to working in secure environments

Required Skills/Experience
The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Vocational/Diploma/Associate Degree (technical field) or relevant VMware certification or relevant experience with a Minimum of 3 years? experience as a VMware Horizon Design Engineer
  • Skilled in the design and deployment of multi-site, VDI Farms utilising VMware vCenter, ESXi and Horizon View VDI (Connection Servers Desktop Pools), plus the following technologies:
  • Unified Access Gateway
  • Dynamic Environment Manager (Roaming profiles / user setting retention)
  • Gold Image Management
  • AppVolumes Management Application Management
  • Experience with the hardening of Virtualisation Infrastructures using CIS Benchmarks or NIST SP 800-53 controls
  • Experience in the design and implementation of the failover and disaster recovery of Virtulisation services
  • Experience of certificate management as relates to VMware virtualisation
  • Used to working in Multi-Datacentre Environments where availability, resilience and fault tolerance are key elements of every design
  • Have a good understanding of networking as relates to VMware virtual networking and how the virtual networking interoperates with physical networking, including experience of implementing and configuring NSX-T
  • Good written, communication, troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Ability to organise and plan work independently
  • Flexible team player with a ?get it done? attitude
  • Ability to occasionally multi-task and context-switch effectively between different activities

Desirable Skills/Experience
Although not essential, the following skills are desired by the client:

  • Experience with the design and build of client devices, such as Thin / Zero / Thick clients with Windows or Linux-based Operating Systems, such as Windows 11 or BeCrypt Paradox
  • experiance of supporting Microsoft Windows Server services, such as Active Directory (AD), Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and Active Directory File Service (AD FS)
  • Experience of Cisco-based network services
  • Experience of Micorosoft implementations of DNS and DHCP technologies
  • Knowledge of Network Attached Storage, block and file solutions as relates to provisioning for virtualisation
  • Technical Infrastructure skill in an enterprise environment, for example: Advanced Infrastructure skills covering administration, fault finding and diagnosis
